Babysitting Injury

Babysitting Injury

LA and I went the the JSL party and auction tonight at the Ponds. I was playing in the golf tournament on Saturday and it was included in the cost. We arranged to have Nanny Von and Gramps keep her and they were going to Wes's baseball game in Bamburg. At some point while at the game there was an accident with Aubrey grabbing Nana Von's Diet Coke can. She is very determined to get anything she can touch to her mouth and if it means pulling it out of your hands, she is up for the challenge. In the list of instructions we give to anyone taking care of Aubrey (don't laugh when you get your copy to read and sign before you keep her, we're serious), it plainly reads not to attempt to drink anything while holding her or if she is within reach of someone else. Evidently Nana Von decided to skip reading that part and not listen to the verbal instructions we gave her about this before she left. She had her Diet Coke can within her reach and Aubrey attacked and Nana doesn't really know what happened after that point. However, mommy and daddy's investigation of the event and other eyewitness reports indicated that the can got close enough for her to put her hand on the top and she got her index finger in the opening which then cut her as she pulled on the can. At that point eyewitnesses said the blood started to run out everywhere and Aubrey started crying. They finally got the blood stopped and she had a 3/8" cut in the first joint of her index finger from the germ filled opening of the Diet Coke can. They decided not to take her to the emergency room for stitches or a tetanus shot. We are sure Nana Von felt bad about Aubrey getting hurt and being the first one to keep her and injure her but I am pretty sure she was more worried about telling us what had happened. For two reasons, first our response and second, she knows what Section 3 part 4 says about injuries while keeping Aubrey - "you will be moved down the babysitting list to secondary status and called when all other options have been attempted". It's good news for everyone else because they moved up a spot on the babysitting ladder.

The cut ended up being like a paper cut and she has been fine with it. We did put a band-aid and some medicine on it and that was funny because she couldn't bend her finger and she didn't know what to do.

I will remember that part about being a "secondary" babysitter next time you need one! For those of you have not kept her yet, she is the most determined little 7 month old I have EVER seen. You can just see her little mind trying to figure out how she can accomplish her mission.....and she meant to have the Coke can....at all costs! Gramps almost threw up over the situation! So I had Wesley telling me not to get the blood on my white shirt or Leigh-Ann would know, Aubrey screaming like we had intentionally cut her, Gramps in the corner of the ballfield gagging, and everyone, including the Teams who were playing looking our way, and me trying to reassure everyone and Aubrey that everything was ok. It was quite a spectacle...her first babysitting injury. I can tell you, there are more to come, because she is not a sit-around and look pretty little girl. She is an action packed pretty little girl!
